Phone signal, internet and the common service centre

Mobile coverage arrived in these villages before treated water did. This page prints what the census found for signal, landlines, internet centres and newspaper delivery.

20with a common service centre

Where online government work actually gets done.

Census of India 2011, Village Directory. Surveyed 2009.

The one thing every village had

Mobile coverage is the only item on this entire site that is recorded as present in all 22 of the 22 villages. Not the school, not the tap, not the doctor. The phone signal.

20 of them also had a common service centre, the licensed shop where people do online government work, which is where a household actually applies for a certificate, a pension or a ration card. That number matters more than it looks, because it is the difference between a government scheme existing and a household being able to reach it. A landline reached 18 of the 22.

What this table cannot tell you It cannot tell you about mobile internet, which barely existed in rural Gujarat when this survey was taken. Coverage in this table means a signal for calls. There is no data speed column and none was invented.

What this table cannot tell you It cannot be read as a statement about 2026 network coverage. Seventeen years of tower building sit between this survey and today, and none of it is in this source.

One warning that applies to this whole page. The census amenity columns describe 2009, not 2026. Nothing built in the Dholera region after 2009 is in them, and an absence here is not proof of an absence on the ground today. It is proof that the last national survey of these villages did not find one.
